Martha Casanave: Costal Pinholes
From Vol. 1 No. 3

In the 1920s, the beautiful Monterey Peninsula, with the adjacent areas of spectacular Point Lobos and the even more dramatic Big Sur Coast, became a center of landscape photography.

A photographic tradition evolved, starting with Edward Weston, his son Brett, and then Ansel Adams.

I have lived and photographed on the Monterey Peninsula for over thirty years.

  • I have lived and photographed on the Monterey Peninsula for over thirty years.
  • As Casanave ventured outdoors with her pinhole camera, working in the style of other prominent photographers like Edward Weston and Wynn Bullock, she explored.

  • She has been an exhibiting and working photographer and educator on the Monterey Peninsula for over thirty years.
  • Casanave made beautiful and dreamy images of Leningrad in winter using a pinhole camera (film camera with no lens).
  • The next generation included Morley Baer, Wynn Bullock, Al Weber, Richard Garrod and Henry Gilpin. To this day, Central Coast black-and-white landscape photography still thrives with the images of John Sexton, Huntington Witherill, Tom Millea, Ryuijie, and others.

I have lived and photographed on the Monterey Peninsula for over thirty years.

I was, and am, privileged to count Ansel, Brett, Morley and others of the present generation as my friends; I have photographed nearly all of them (indoors). And yet this is the first time I myself have ever turned a camera toward the natural scene.

With my poor sense of balance
